Surreal Project

This is project three, a photo montage using photos, scans, and web images.  If I was a bear I would wear a shirt but not pants.

Project 2

As a recent South Dakotan, I am getting used to flatness everywhere.  Mountains are breathtaking from a distance, growing as you get closer.  I wanted to combine images to make a picture of some kids standing in awe of one.

Surrealists

Ernst, Max The Eye of Silence 1943/44 Oil on canvas 108 x 141 cm
Max Ernst painted The Eye of Silence based on frottage, or rubbings that stimulated the mind with their original shape. He is credited with inventing this technique.  His colors in this painting are what stick out to me the most. I think that starting with an organic rubbing let him build a fantastic yet natural landscape behind the lone figure, which I actually didn't notice the first time I saw this image. The title points to the many eye-like images throughout the painting that gaze down upon the solitary woman.

Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here Album Art, Hipgnosis Design, 1975
This photo refers to the idiom "getting burned." The photo was shot on the Burbank Studios lot in Los Angeles.  The two stuntmen, Ronnie Rondell and Danny Rogers, shook hands in the lot. The man on fire in the photo was actually on fire, which gives the photo realism hard to get with photoshop, as well as some nice street cred.  I like the simplicity of the image, and I find it striking.  One thing that I did not notice immediately was that the crop on the right of the image is marked by a burn as well.  Alternate editions of this photo were manipulated to switch the positioning of the men.
